In pharyngitis, Decadron may be used as an add-on to antibiotic drug therapy to improve pain relief. Common side effects associated with Decadron include upset stomach, vomiting, headache, dizziness, insomnia, depression, and anxiety, among others. It can also make you more susceptible to certain illnesses and infections.

In a study of children with pharyngitis, a single oral dose of dexamethasone did not decrease the time to onset of clinically significant pain relief or the time to complete pain relief. In those children with positive strep test results, improvement in the time to onset of pain relief was statistically significant. In another study, researchers at the Orlando Regional Medical Center evaluated Decadron added to oral penicillin or erythromycin in patients with pharyngitis. Researchers found that dexamethasone was effective as an add-on treatment in this study. Improvements in pain scores were greater in the dexamethasone-treated group; also time to onset of pain relief was faster in those patients that received dexamethasone.
