CAUTIONS
  • Notify your doctor if you are allergic to soy lecithin or related food products such as soybean and peanut (for use of inhalation aerosol).

SPECIAL INFORMATION
Do not spray aerosol into eyes. If this occurs it may result in blurred vision, worsening or narrow angle glaucoma, or eye pain. Shake well before each use and rinse mouth after each use to decrease the risk of dry mouth. To prime the nasal spray pump, press down seven times. If used regularly, no further priming is necessary. If not used for at least 24 hours, the pump will require two primes. If not used for at least seven days, the pump will again require seven primes.

The American Journal of Medicine reviewed the use of Atrovent to prevent Exercise-induced Bronchospasm (EIB) in patients with asthma. It was noted that ipratropium primarily affects the central airways compared with other drugs that act on the small, peripheral airways. The researchers reviewed a number of small studies evaluating the variable effects of Atrovent in people with EIB. In these studies, the time before exercise challenge after the drug was given ranged from 30 minutes to 90 minutes. Some of the studies in this review showed that bronchoconstrictor response was not altered by ipratropium use. Other studies showed that use of this drug resulted in a partial response in some patients. Among those that had a response to ipratropium, it was found that these patients had less severe asthma, milder exercise-induced bronchoconstriction, and mostly central airways responses to exercise. The researcher emphasized that a recurring theme among the studies reviewed was that ipratropium was more effective when the obstruction involved the central airways. Lastly, in the studies involving cold weather, pretreatment with Atrovent did not affect the change in airway measurements when compared with no pretreatment.
